Changing of the guard

January 11, 2008
Changing of the guard

Last Wednesday, the campus community bid a fond farewell to Jesus Villahermosa.

After 15 months of service, it was the former Campus Safety director’s final day at PLU. He is moving on to a new position as the head of the core security division of the City-County Building in downtown Tacoma.

The reception featured roast beef hor devours in honor of Villahermosa’s affection for beef. Laura Majovski, vice president for student life, and Tom Huelsbeck, assistant dean for campus life, thanked Villahermosa for his service, presented him with a PLU plaque and a “certificate of appreciation.”

The farewell reception also served as a welcome for Tony Berger, the new director of Campus Safety who began transitioning into the role Dec. 17.

Berger has 21 years of law enforcement experience, and his hiring continues the unique relationship PLU has with the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department. As a sworn member of the sheriff’s department, Berger is contracted with PLU to direct Campus Safety.

Berger has been with the sheriff’s department since 1989. In that time, he has filled a variety of roles, including patrol deputy, juvenile investigations deputy, special assault detective, supervisor of the domestic violence investigations unit, and, for the last six years, supervisor of the crime analysis and information unit.

Born and raised in Tacoma, Berger has close ties to this area and to PLU. He and his wife, Zoe, have two sons, Aaron and Andrew.
