Christmas in Scandinavia

November 30, 2007

Experience Scandinavian Christmas traditions at the annual Norwegian Christmas Service and the Swedish Sankta Lucia Fest this week.

The Norwegian Christmas Service will take place on Wednesday, Dec. 5 at 7 p.m. in the Scandinavian Cultural Center. The candlelight service is conducted in Norwegian and English, and includes a sermon by the Rev. Philip Nesvig with musical accompaniment by David Dahl, professor emeritus in the music department. Students in the Scandinavian Studies Program will present songs and read scriptures.

Admission is free and a reception will follow the service. The event is co-sponsored by the Scandinavian Cultural Center and the Scandinavian Studies Program. For more information, contact Susan Young at youngse@plu.edu or ext. 7349.

The Swedish Sankta Lucia Fest is slated for Friday, Dec. 7 at 7:30 p.m. in Lagerquist Concert Hall. The festival honors Lucia, a saint who devoted her life to God and serving the poor.

Traditionally, the eldest daughter in a Swedish family wears a crown of candles and serves as Lucia during the religious ceremony. At PLU, however, female students compete to be crowned Lucia.

The festival features traditional singing, festive dancing and a visit from the Swedish Santa Claus, Jultomten. After the program, the student crowned Lucia leads the way along a lighted path to the SCC for a reception.

Tickets for the event are $8 for general admission, $5 for SCC members and students, and $3 for children 11 and under. For tickets and information call the Campus Concierge at ext. 7411.
