Stem cell research topic of documentary film
November 30, 2007
A premiere screening of the documentary film “Mapping Stem Cell Research: Terra Incognita” will presented on Thursday, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. in room 100 of Ingram Hall.
Some consider stem cell research the Holy Grail of regenerative medicine, while others view the idea as morally wrong. In this 60-minute film, one man decides to do everything he can to harness the full potential of stem cell medicine when his daughter is paralyzed from the waist down, in hopes that she might walk again. Follow this man, a respected neurologist, into the unknown territory of stem cell research.
The documentary is scheduled for its debut broadcast on PBS on Jan. 15 at 10 p.m. It is one in a series of Independent Television Service (ITVS) programs.
The screening will be followed by a discussion led by PLU biomedical ethicist Hannah Phelps. There is no cost to attend the event, which is presented by ITVS, KCTS, and PLU’s MediaLab and French Club.
MediaLab, a student-led organization within the School of Arts and Communication, will host an ITVS documentary premiere screening each month through April 2008. Upcoming films include “Banished” in January and “Iron Ladies of Liberia” in February.
