Gospel singin’ alumna wows ‘em

On Tuesday, Crystal Aikin ’97 was crowned the winner of Black Entertainment Television’s gospel competition “Sunday Best.” Read more about her win in the Tacoma News Tribune's article.
A standing-room only crowd greeted Crystal Aikin ’97 in the Columbia Center last Wednesday.
The PLU alumna is one of two finalists in Black Entertainment Television’s gospel competition "Sunday Best.” She returned to her alma mater last Wednesday to encourage friends, family and fans to vote.
Like Fox’s popular singing competition “American Idol,” fans select the winner of “Sunday Best” by calling in votes and voting online. The voting lines are open through 6 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 3. The winner will be announced in a live broadcast Tuesday.
At last Wednesday’s event, Aikin sang a medley of songs and signed autographs. She expressed her thanks to the many community members gathered to support her.
To vote for Aikin, call 1-866-940-9982 or vote online. Phone calls are limited to 10 votes per phone number, but there are not limitations on Internet voting.
Born and raised in Tacoma, Aikin is an emergency room nurse in the area. She is also the daughter of retired PLU nursing professor Shirley Aikin.
