German film recounts struggles of terrorist group member
November 21, 2007
The German film “Die Stille nach dem Schub: The Legend of Rita” will be shown on Thursday, Nov. 29 at 7 p.m. in the main lounge of Hong International Hall.
Set during the later years of the Cold War, the political thriller recounts the struggles of Rita, a young West German woman. Rita is fleeing from the consequences of her past involvement with a bank-robbing terrorist group, which is loosely based on the famous Baader-Meinhof group.
In the 1970s, after a series of clashes with police and other complications, the terrorist group is forced to disband. Rita takes refuge in East Germany under a false identity, and the film is a vivid portrait of her growing sense of alienation even though her devotion to the distant ideal of socialism never changes.
The film is in German but includes English subtitles. It is shown in conjunction with German 101 and is open to faculty, staff and students.
