Alum, “Sunday Best” finalist on campus Wednesday
November 22, 2007
Crystal Aikin ’97, a finalist in the Black Entertainment Television’s gospel competition "Sunday Best," will be on campus Wednesday, Nov. 28 at 7 p.m. in the Columbia Center.
Like Fox’s popular singing competition “American Idol,” fans select the winner of “Sunday Best” by calling in votes and voting online. Aikin is among the final three finalists, and the winner will be announced in a live broadcast on Dec. 4. Winners get a recording contract and a new car.
The show airs Tuesday nights on BET. At Wednesday’s event, the previous night’s show will be played, and Aikin will sing at least one number and sign autographs.
According to Lauralee Hagen, director of alumni and parent relations, the event aims to make people aware of Aiken’s talent and encourage them to vote for her. The phone number to call to vote for her will be available on Wednesday morning, and pamphlets with voting information will be provided at the event.
Aikin is an emergency room nurse based in Washington state, and she is also the daughter of retired PLU nursing professor Shirley Aikin. For additional information, listen to this NPR interview.
