Oakman publishes book depicting Jesus in context
November 16, 2007
Doug Oakman, dean of humanities, recently published “Jesus and the Peasants,” part of Cascade Books’ Matrix Series.
Categorized as a biblical studies text, the book focuses on both the systemic issues and depths of individual Gospel passages. Through his keen eye for textual detail, archaeological data, comparative materials and systemic overviews, Oakman describes Jesus in his own context.
The volume is organized into three interrelated parts: the political economy and the peasant values of Jesus, the Jesus traditions within peasant realities and the peasant aims of Jesus.
The series, titled Matrix: the Bible in Mediterranean context, includes two other titles: “The New Testament in Cross-Cultural Perspective” by Richard Rohrbaugh and “Jesus and Identity” by Markus Cromhout.
Cascade Books is the new academic book division of Wipf and Stock.
