KPLU joins launch of multimedia site
November 09, 2007

KPLU partnered with National Public Radio and 11 other NPR-member stations to launch the multimedia Web site NPR Music on Nov. 5.
The free, comprehensive site features on-air and online content gathered from partnership members, as well as original content such as interviews, reviews, blogs and live performances. The new site permits users to explore, experience and enjoy the many music genres found on public radio.
At launch, KPLU, which is known for its unique mix of jazz, blues, funk and Latin jazz, is contributing to the Studio Sessions, in-studio audio and video performances recorded at member stations. One of the first features jazz singer Karrin Allyson and KPLU’s Dick Stein. More sessions, jazz music lists and question-and-answers will be posted in the future.
“The NPR Music site is a valuable extension of KPLU's jazz programming,” says Joey Cohn, KPLU Program Director. “Jazz is a rare commodity on local radio, but through this partnership more jazz fans worldwide will have access to the music.”
Seattle-based music station KEXP is also offering exclusive Studio Sessions on the site, along with live concerts and music lists. Currently, KEXP has posted content from their recent live broadcast at New York City’s CMJ Music Marathon, including performances from Band of Horses, The Hold Steady, Yeasayer and The Epochs.
The site features a range of music genres, from rock and pop to folk and jazz. Content includes intimate interviews and studio sessions with artists and bands, national and regional web concerts, reviews and news, blogs from critics, experts and artists, and podcasts. The Artist Index feature, an A to Z artist directory, provides content on more than 2000 performers.
Coinciding with the launch of NPR Music is a media player exclusive to NPR. It allows users to create playlists for audio or video on the site and offers recommendations for related content depending on those selections.
