November 02, 2007
Vidya Thirumurthy and Kent Gerlach, instructional development and leadership faculty from the School of Education and Movement Studies, recently published articles in notable scholarly journals.
Thirumurthy, assistant professor education, co-wrote the article, “Special Education in India at the Crossroads,” which was published in the 2007 journal Childhood Education.
The article examined the multi-tiered Indian education system and explained the many challenges it faced in identifying learning difficulties, using dyslexia as an example. Their examination illuminated the rough road ahead for special needs children in inclusive settings. The two authors also discussed the burgeoning efforts of individuals and organizations to support and educate children with disabilities and presented their recommendations.
She also co-wrote the article, “Honoring Teachers: A World of Perspectives,” which was published in the Journal of Early Childhood Teacher Education. The cross-cultural study examined the early childhood professionals’ perceptions related to their social status, working conditions and public appreciation in Guatemala, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Mexico, Peru and the United States.
Meanwhile, Kent Gerlach, professor of education, co-wrote the book, “Paraeducators in Schools, Strengthening the Educational Team.” Published in 2007, Gerlach wrote a section in the book titled, “Teamwork, Communication and Problem Solving.”
