Sounds of Scandinavia
October 26, 2007

Woodwind music floated from the Scandinavian Cultural Center last Tuesday evening during a performance by the Danish trio, Wood āNā Flutes.
The ensemble performed repertoire that spans over 800 years, from emotion-packed baroque sonatas to more energetic works by contemporary composers. The music calls for a range of recorders, and the group had more than 20 of various sizes and historical types.
Musicians Vicki Boeckman, Gertie Johnsson and Pia Brinch Jensen met at the Royal Danish Academy of Music and formed the trio in 1996. They performed regularly in Europe, and made their American debut in 2003 and returned again in 2005. Their visit to PLU came at the tail end of their third American tour.
Boeckman currently resides in Seattle, but spent 23 years performing and teaching in Denmark. Both Johnsson and Brinch Jensen live and teach in Copenhagen, Denmark.
The ensemble has commissioned and premiered several works by Danish composers. Additionally, the trio, in collaboration with harpist Tine Rehling, has been selected to perform for elementary school children as part of a Danish educational outreach program for three consecutive years.
