Test of generator a success

October 19, 2007

A test of the new generator in Mortvedt Library on Sept. 21 was successful.

During a power outage, the new piece of equipment will help the university maintain an external network for Web and e-mail communications, as well as internal and external phone communications, said Jennifer Wamboldt, emergency programs manager.

Utility power was cut to the server room to begin the test, and it took less than 30 seconds for the generator to begin supplying power. After about 15 minutes, utility power was restored to the room. The generator continued to run for another 30 minutes, which it is supposed to do to make sure utility power is stable.

The test proved the server room will be powered during a utility power interruption, which means phone service will be maintained on campus. Additionally, network, e-mail and PLU’s Web site will be accessible to people off-campus.

On-campus network access will only be available to those buildings not affected by the outage or that have their own generators. In addition to Mordvedt, the University Center and Morken Center have generators that support the buildings.
