Listen to NPR and KPLU on your cell phone

October 19, 2007

KPLU is part of the beta launch for two new National Public Radio mobile services that enables listeners to access content from KPLU and NPR via mobile handheld devices, such as cell phones.

The services are NPR Mobile Voice and NPR Mobile Web. The services were initially launched in August 2007 and now include a total of 10 public radio stations.

NPR Mobile Voice allows users to access local KPLU news and national NPR news through any mobile device that can make phone calls, including cell and landline phones. By dialing 206-438-3990, KPLU's mobile voice number, users can hear the NPR “Story of the Day,” play the “Wait, Wait…Don't Tell Me!” daily news quiz and find other NPR stations.

The second service, NPR Mobile Web, gives users access to NPR news and features through cell phones and personal digital assistants. Users simply browse to KPLU’s mobile web address and navigate through topic links, which pull together related stories from a wide variety of NPR content.

Both services are free of charge to users. However, listeners using the service may incur usage charges based on their carrier’s monthly voice calling and data plans. More information on the NPR Mobile services pilot launch is available at KPLU’s Web site.
