Rededication day
October 19, 2007

Homecoming 2007 ended Oct. 14 with the rededication of the University Center, which celebrated the building’s intense remodel.
The complete renovation was a first for the building, which dates back to 1970 and originally cost $3.3 million to construct. While the remodel cost significantly more – just over $14 million – it took far less time to complete: six months compared with the 15 required to build it 37 years ago.
Improvements to the facility include an expanded dining hall with restaurant-style seating, new meeting and gathering spaces both inside and out, and new offices for Student Life, ASPLU, student media and Campus Ministry. At the rededication ceremony, President Loren Anderson said the facility is just as good as new, and maybe a little better.
“The renovation is a huge success,” he announced.
Board of Regents Chair Robert Gomulkiewicz added, “This University Center truly is a university center, the center of this university.”
In addition to feeding the campus community, the UC also acts as a hub for social and community events and is the center of learning on campus.
“I learned a lot in class, that is for sure, but I learned just as much within this University Center,” Gomulkiewicz said, describing how as a student, his conversations with fellow students, faculty and staff helped shaped his views on life, religion and leadership.
“That’s the kind of learning that PLU wants our students to have,” he said.
A time capsule filled during the ceremony was placed in the UC after the ceremony to be opened by future generations. It included a variety of items representing the people and activities on campus, from the Daily Flyer and a KCNS DVD to a student planner and reusable lunch bag.
Following the ceremonial ribbon cutting, Anderson officially rededicated the building as a hub for the campus community, a resource for PLU’s neighbors and a symbol of the university’s commitment to promote sustainability.
