MBA series features career workshop, Group Health CEO

October 12, 2007

The State Farm MBA Executive Leadership Series will break from lecture-mode on Saturday, Oct. 20 to host an all-day “Make Your Career Soar” workshop with career coach and bestselling author Robin Ryan.

The event will be held in the Morken Center and the Mary Baker Russell Music Center. It is open to all PLU alumni and MBA students. Reservations are required.

From 9 a.m. to noon, participants will learn interviewing and networking techniques, Ryan’s personal branding strategy and the formula for successful salary negotiations. After a networking luncheon, the afternoon session from 1 to 3:30 p.m. focuses on a resume-writing workshop. Participants will update their resume using Ryan’s trademarked “employer-approved” template.

Ryan currently runs a career counseling practice in Seattle, providing individual career coaching, resume writing services and interview preparation to clients nationwide. She has appeared on television and radio programs, and her articles have appeared in major magazines and newspapers. Ryan is the best-selling author of a number of books, including “What to Do with the Rest of Your Life,” “Winning Resumes,” “Winning Cover Letters,” and “Soaring on Your Strengths.”

The lecture series continues on Oct. 23 with Scott Armstrong, president and chief executive officer of Group Health Cooperative, one of the nation’s largest consumer-governed health care systems.

He has more than 20 years of experience in healthcare, joining the company in 1986. He has served in range of positions, from assistant hospital administrator to chief operating officer. He was named CEO and president in January 2005.

Armstrong is on a number of boards, including the Alliance of Community Health Plans and the Seattle Chamber of Commerce. He is also a founding board member for OneHealthPort, a secure portal to access online services from Northwest health organizations.

He received a bachelor’s degree from Hamilton College in New York and a master’s degree in business with a concentration in hospital administration from the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
