Mexican indigenous leader to visit PLU
October 05, 2007
Centolia Maldonado Vasquez, a community leader with the Binational Front of Indigenous Organziations, will speak on Monday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. in room 100 of Ingram Hall.
Vasquez has been a leader in promoting participation in the indigenous community development projects in her home region of Oaxaca, Mexico. Oaxaca has been home to recent social uprisings and conflicts that have brought international attention to the low levels of education, health and infrastructure development in Mexico.
Vasquez will address the current state of this conflict and some of its principal causes, including the influences of NAFTA and non human-centered globalization. This is a bilingual event with Spanish to English translation, and is free and open to the public.
For more information about the visit, please contact Tamara Williams at ext. 7678 or williatr@plu.edu.
