The Family Enterprise Institute of PLU’s School of Business recognized Air Van as the best medium sized business. Judges considered the nominees’ contributions to the community, industry and multigenerational family business involvement.

Alumnus Rick Guild ’74, was named president and CEO of the Boys & Girls Club of the South Puget Sound. Guild began working for the organization after earning his degree in social welfare.

Pro, student SPJ chapters win awards

The Society of Professional Journalists selected PLU as the top student chapter in the nation. PLU also received the regional award, competing against the University of Washington and Washington State University for the honor. Club leaders attribute the award to their protest against censorship.

Local singer sweeps BET gospel show

Alumna Crystal Aikin recently won “Sunday Best,” a gospel music competition on the Black Entertainment Television (BET) network. Prior to the competition, Aikin was employed as a nurse and performed throughout the Northwest. Aikin said her main goal is to honor God with her music.

The Scandinavian Cultural Center at PLU sponsored the 57th annual Sankta Lucia Fest. According to Scandinavian tradition, Sankta Lucia, the “festival of light,” ushers in the beginning of the Christmas season.

Testimony clear on domestic benefits

In an editorial, Alumnus William Painter reported on the supportive testimony presented at a Pierce County Council meeting on providing domestic partnership benefits for Pierce County employees. Painter praised those who spoke and encouraged others to speak up on other issues before they become a product of legislation.

No reindeer needed

Sheriff’s deputies and volunteers from PLU’s Campus Safety helped distribute toys and candy to children in the Parkland area over the holiday season. To make the project more fun, many volunteers dress up as Santa, Mrs. Claus or Santa’s elves.

Local students earn Act Six scholarships

Tacoma area high school students have been named Act Six Scholars for 2008. The Act Six program identifies urban Tacoma students with strong leadership potential and provides them with full scholarships, peer support and leadership training. Next fall, PLU will welcome its first cadre of Act Six Scholars.
