Brotherly twist on UPS-PLU rivalry
PLU football player Brady Freeman and his twin brother Boone, who plays for the University of Puget Sound, bring a new perspective to the cross-Tacoma football rivalry. The Freeman family enjoys supporting both teams because “either way, somebody wins.”

Fort Lewis kids excel under their own ‘Mr. T’
After earning a business degree from PLU and working for the state for awhile, Jeff Thompson sought more fulfillment so he became a kindergarten teacher at Fort Lewis’ Evergreen Elementary School. Thompson runs an innovative classroom and has received several awards for his teaching abilities.

Fun-loving Warriors ‘get down to business’
Since returning to Edmonds-Woodway High School as head football coach, alumnus John Gradwohl has rejuvenated the schools football program. He credits former PLU coach Frosty Westering as the inspiration behind his coaching. Gradwohl said he learned that a positive attitude, close bonds and unselfishness can help a team overcome physical limitations.

Democracy, Development, and Peace: The Norwegian Approach
Student Christy Olsen profiles her fall 2006 study away experience in Norway. The program is a collaborative effort between PLU, the University of Namibia and Hedmark University College. Students learn about Norwegian culture and society as well as the Norwegian approach to peace.

PLU rehabbing campus and its surroundings
As part of PLU’s commitment to sustainability, the university plans to renovate existing facilities. Future campus redevelopment plans include a new KPLU building, a new fitness center, an improved entrance to campus, as well as renovations to Eastvold Chapel and Olson Gymnasium.

UW Tacoma gets award for water education
PLU received a 2007 “Bay Hero, Excellence in Environmental Education” award from Citizens for a Healthy Bay. The organization represents local citizens in advocating for clean waters in the Tacoma area.

Project connects homeless to services, community
PLU nursing student Ilona Damblac practiced administering vaccines at a Project Homeless Connect event. The comprehensive project provides Pierce County homeless with food, clothing, veterinary care, haircuts, health care and other social services.

Grants will help kids get first apartment
The state of Washington is administering grants to improve the transition of youth when they leave the foster care system. In an effort to help youth who have “aged out,” PLU will work with students who are interested in the Foster Care to College program.

Working at art
Barry Johnson, senior lecturer of music, and alumna Kate Monthy have incorporated their love of the arts into their careers. Along with three other PLU alumni, Monthy co-founded MLKballet, a non-profit dance company that serves children in Tacoma’s Hilltop neighborhood. Johnson maintains an Opera career by working with the Seattle Opera, Tacoma Opera, Tacoma Symphony, Bremerton Symphony and teaching at PLU.

The search for a successor
Bill Frame, former vice president of finance and operations, has returned to PLU as the interim dean of the School of Business. Frame will be instrumental in recruiting the replacement to dean Andy Turner, who returned to the private sector last spring.
