Faculty diversity workshops begin Oct. 3
September 21, 2007
A series of workshops, sponsored by the Office of the Provost and The Center for Teaching and Learning, aimed at promoting and celebrating diversity will be held Oct. 3-4 on campus at the UC Regency Room.
The first event will take place Oct. 3 with a dinner from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. At this event, faculty of color are invited to join their colleagues and be our guests for conversation on faculty diversity and teaching at PLU.
The next event will take place Oct. 4, when an academic support staff workshop will take place from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. This workshop will examine how students from diverse backgrounds might respond to the university atmosphere, the expectations they might bring and the issues that students might not foresee or articulate as they plan their academic careers.
Another faculty workshop will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. that will focus on pedagogy and diversity in the classroom. At this workshop, faculty will examine the kinds of interaction that take place in the classroom, basing the discussion on Mary Louise Pratt’s concept of “contact zone.”
The workshop leader will be Carolyn Medine, associate professor of religion at the University of Georgia. She specializes in southern and African American women’s religion and spirituality and the postmodern and postcolonial theory.
To register, please contact LeAnn Evey, Office of the Provost at eveyld@plu.edu
Seating is limited, so please register before Sept. 28.
