PLU Egyptologist discusses rediscovery of missing mummy

September 14, 2007

PLU Egyptologist and Faculty Fellow Don Ryan will give a lecture titled “Ancient Egypt’s Lost Queen Found” on Wednesday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. in the Scandinavian Cultural Center.

Ryan directs the Pacific Lutheran University Valley of the Kings Project, which rediscovered a lost tomb in Egypt’s ancient royal cemetery in 1989. The tomb contained a mummy that some Egyptologists speculated could be the famous female pharaoh, Queen Hatshepsut. Investigations by Egyptian scientists have just recently concluded the mummy Ryan’s team discovered is in fact Hatshepsut, who ruled during the 18th dynasty.

In his lecture, Ryan will discuss his team’s rediscovery of the tomb and the processes used to identify the mummy. Ryan will also give an update of the ongoing work of the PLU expedition, which will return to the Valley of the Kings in November.

The lecture is sponsored by the humanities division. For more information, call ext. 7321.
