Polish choir to perform on Friday

The Polish Cantate Deo Men’s Choir will perform in Lagerquist Concert Hall on Friday, Sept. 21 at 8 p.m.

The choir began as a cathedral boys choir, formed by Bishop Ignacy Jeza to greet Pope John Paul II when he arrived in Koszalin, Poland in 1991. The original members were between the ages of seven and nine, but the choir has since evolved into a young men’s choir. The choir’s current tour only includes the men of the choir, a total of 14 singers.

Cantate Deo has performed around the world. One of the choir’s most memorable tours was its first trip to Rome and the Vatican in August 1995. At Saint Peter’s Basilica, the choir sang “Our Father,” and the Pope personally thanked them for their presentation.

The group was also asked to sing at a Holy Mass in the Castel Gandolfo. The mass was broadcast on Radio Vatican, which is listened to all over the world. The choir sang at the Vatican again 1999 and 2000, and also at the Pope’s visit to the Ukraine in 2001.

The audition process for the choir is intense and takes place annually at various Koszalin grade schools. Rehearsals are held bi-weekly and voice lessons once a week. At the end of each concert season, each member is given an award and recognition, along with gifts of books, records and other mementos.

The choir will perform at PLU under the direction of Przemyslaw Palka, director of choral studies at the Academy of Music in Posnan. Palka has directed the choir since 2003.

Admission to the concert is free, but a free-will offering will be accepted.
