Parenting issues focus of event series this month

September 06, 2007

The women’s and gender studies program is hosting a series of events this month that highlight the issues facing parents today under the theme “Motherhood: Take a Second Look.”

The first of the three events is on display in the University Gallery in Ingram Hall through Thursday, Sept. 27. The photography exhibit, “Beggars & Choosers: Motherhood is Not a Class Privilege in America,” chronicles the experiences of mothers and their children in the United States.

The show features the work of dozens of noteworthy photographers. It is associated with the book “Beggars and Choosers: How the Politics of Choice Shapes Adoption, Abortion, and Welfare in the United States,” written by prize-winning historian Rickie Solinger. Solinger and Kay Obering coordinated the show with funding from The Open Society Institute.

The second event is the showing of the film, “The Motherhood Manifesto,” on Wednesday, Sept. 19 at 1:45 p.m. in Morken 103.

The film depicts the varying levels of social and economic support provided for parents in different parts of the world. The film runs about an hour and will be followed by a panel discussion of PLU faculty and staff.

The final event is connected to the film showing. Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner, co-author of “The Motherhood Manifesto,” will give a lecture on Monday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. in Ingram 100.

Rowe-Finkbeiner will discuss the importance of parents and their allies to work politically to build social and economic support for working families. She has been instrumental in creating the national online organization Moms Rising, which also includes Dads Blogging and Families Rising.
