Business leaders offer wisdom, guidance

The State Farm MBA Executive Leadership Series returns this fall with a line-up featuring four local, prominent business executives and a career workshop with a top Seattle-based career coach.

The series kicks off on Monday, Sept. 17 at 6 p.m. with Gordon McHenry, Jr., pictured here. McHenry works for the Boeing Company directing global corporate citizenship in the Northwest region and the directing the corporate strategy for his team.

McHenry is responsible for developing and implementing strategies that align and communicate the Boeing global corporate citizenship message to key internal and external stakeholders. Prior to joining Boeing in 1988, McHenry worked in the civil litigation department of the Perkins Coie Law Firm.

McHenry is active in many civic organizations, currently serving as a member of the board of trustees for Seattle University and the United Way of King County. He graduated from Seattle University with a bachelor’s degree in political science, and also earned a juris doctorate from Georgetown University’s School of Law and a certificate from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Business management development program.

The series continues on Oct. 9 at 6 p.m. with certified public accountant Bob Hinton.

On Oct. 23, Scott Armstrong will speak. Armstrong is the president and chief executive officer of Group Health Cooperative, one of the nation’s largest consumer-governed health care systems.

He has more than 20 years of experience in healthcare, joining the company in 1986. He has served in range of positions, from assistant hospital administrator to chief operating officer. He was named CEO and president in January 2005.

Armstrong is on a number of boards, including the Alliance of Community Health Plans and the Seattle Chamber of Commerce. He is also a founding board member for OneHealthPort, a secure portal to access online services from Northwest health organizations.

He received a bachelor’s degree from Hamilton College in New York and a master’s degree in business with a concentration in hospital administration from the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

The series will break from lecture-mode on Saturday, Oct. 20 to host an all-day “Make Your Career Soar” workshop with career coach and bestselling author Robin Ryan in the Morken Center and the Mary Baker Russell Music Center. The event is open to all PLU alumni and MBA students. Reservations are required.

From 9 a.m. to noon, participants will learn interviewing and networking techniques, Ryan’s personal branding strategy and the formula for successful salary negotiations. After a networking luncheon, the afternoon session from 1 to 3:30 p.m. focuses on a resume-writing workshop. Participants will update their resume using Ryan’s trademarked “employer-approved” template.

Ryan currently runs a career counseling practice in Seattle, providing individual career coaching, resume writing services and interview preparation to clients nationwide. She has appeared on television and radio programs, and her articles have appeared in major magazines and newspapers. Ryan is the best-selling author of a number of books, including “What to Do with the Rest of Your Life,” “Winning Resumes,” “Winning Cover Letters,” and “Soaring on Your Strengths.”

The series concludes on Thursday, Nov. 15 with Tom Spilman, president of KeyBank’s South Puget Sound district. He’s been with KeyBank since 1994.

Spilman is responsible for growing the client base in retail banking, business banking and commercial banking. He partners with McDonald Financial Group to ensure seamless delivery of banking, investing and trust services to affluent clients in his district.

Spilman is active in his community, serving on a number of boards including the Foundation Board of Tacoma Community College and the Executive Council of Greater Tacoma. He also co-leads the United Way and March of Dimes campaign.

He graduated from Miami University in Ohio with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and from Key’s leadership program at the Case Western Reserve University Weatherhead School of Management.
