Safety drills continue this week

August 31, 2007

Drills will be held in September and October to test the university’s new lock down procedures and text-messaging notification system.

From Sept. 26 to 27, all major academic buildings will participate in lock down drills. The buildings to be tested include the Morken Center, Olson, Rieke Science Center, Memorial Gym and Names Fitness Center, Mary Baker Russell Music Building, Hauge Administration Building, Mortvedt Library, the University Center, Ramstad Commons, Eastvold Auditorium, Ingram Hall and Xavier Hall.

The exercises will be completed one at a time and occur in the morning during the last 10 minutes of class. The lockdown drills will replace the fire drills normally practiced each fall.

Lock down drills for all the residence halls occurred from Sept. 11 to 13.

The new lock down protocol was distributed via e-mail to the campus community and is also available through the emergency building coordinators.

Campus Safety or other emergency responders will initiate a lock down of buildings when there is a perceived imminent threat of danger to occupants.

Essentially, the new procedures call for all doors to be locked, including building entrances and those leading to office suites or classrooms when possible. Those inside the building are advised to get in a locked room and hide out of sight. If the threatening person(s) gains access to the building or space being occupied, the occupants must decide the best way to protect themselves, which may mean remaining hidden, running or fighting, said Jennifer Wamboldt, emergency programs manager.

Each building has at least one emergency building coordinator trained in the new procedures. For more information about a particular building, contact the coordinator for that building. A list of names is available at PLU's emergency preparedness Web site.

The campus community is reminded to report any and all threats of violence to Campus Safety. All reports will be handled in a confidential manner.

For more information, contact Wamboldt at wamboljm@plu.edu or ext. 6042.
