Pura Vida replaces Starbucks
August 24, 2007

Dining and Culinary Services recently awarded Pura Vida Coffee Company with the campus coffee contract.
The Seattle-based company replaces Starbucks as the primary campus supplier. Pura Vida was selected for superior taste test results, product pricing and the company’s commitment to protect human rights and the environment.
“They’re trying to make a difference,” said Audrey Charron, who oversaw the vendor switch. “They are helping the coffee growers in third world countries by giving them a chance to make a sustainable life for their family.”
Pura Vida is a nonprofit organization that promotes and sells 100 percent fair trade products. The company pays farmers a living wage, creates direct links to farmers and their cooperatives and provides access to affordable credit.
Additionally, Pura Vida promotes sustainable practices, such as organic and shade-grown farming, which help protect the environment. All of the company’s profits benefit at-risk children and families in coffee-growing countries.
The transition to Pura Vida began last week, with the installation of new coffee brewing equipment in campus offices. Each office received a free supply of coffee, brewing instructions and guidelines for the new machines and information about the new vendor.
As the university’s chosen vendor, Pura Vida’s products will be available wherever coffee is served or sold on campus. This includes the Commons, Old Main Market, Kelley Café, all campus espresso locations and PLU catering.
Leftover Starbucks coffee products were donated to Nativity House.
For questions about the transition to the new vendor and how it will affect the office coffee program, contact Charron at ext. 7475 or email charroac@plu.edu
