New students arrive on campus this week
August 23, 2007

The largest freshmen classes ever will hit the campus this week, as 726 first-year students arrive Aug. 30 for orientation, called “Discovering Horizons Together.”
In addition to the freshman class, about 250 transfer and international students will arrive on campus to join in a range of activities from the welcome by President Loren Anderson to a late night Lute luau. Both of these events are scheduled for Thursday evening.
“This will help people feel welcome and comfortable in their new home,” said Allison Stephens, associate director of conduct, leadership and orientation. “It will give them a sense of belonging and equip them to be successful here.”
The activities during orientation week, which run through Sept. 4, begin on Thursday when students start moving into the residence halls at 9 a.m. Aside from the annual events, such ice cream socials and area tours, one new feature will be a zero waste picnic.
The picnic will be Thursday from 6 to 7 p.m. on Foss Field. In a nod to PLU’s focus on sustainability, nothing at the picnic will be thrown away, according to Stephens. All products will be eaten or recycled.
One of the highlights of the week will be Friday’s talk by David Hellstrom at Lagerquist Concert Hall. A nationally renowned speaker of the BACCHUS Network, Hellstrom has been coming to the campus during orientation for the last decade to talk to college students about making smart choices, Stephens said.
“He is awesome,” she said. “He has the audience laughing and crying. He’s a great entertainer and educator.”
One of the most popular features of the orientation is the collection off campus tours called “On the Road.”
These trips range from a modest Chihuly Glass Walking Tour in Tacoma to a hike in Olympic National Park. Some of the trips are already full, so check the schedule to see which ones still have openings.
First-year students can find out about all the activities at the orientation Web site, while transfer and international students have their own calendars and events.
Returning students can start checking into their residence halls beginning at 11 a.m. on Aug. 30. For more information contact Residential Life at 253-535-7200 or at rlif@plu.edu.
The first day of classes is Sept. 4. The day will run on a modified class schedule, with all classes cancelled between 8:30 a.m. to 11:40 a.m. to allow students and faculty to attend University Convocation and the Campus Involvement and Job Fair.
