Church leaders discuss religion in the Pacific Northwest
June 29, 2007

Fifty ordained and lay congregational leaders discussed the role of the church in the Pacific Northwest at Congregation Relations’ annual summer theological conference June 18 to 20.
Lee Kluth, director of Congregation Relations, said this year’s event signaled a new direction for the conference.
“In the years past, each year stood alone,” Kluth explained. “But as we talked with (professor of religion) Samuel Torvend and (provost) Patricia O’Connell Killen, we said, let’s do something new.”
That something new included choosing a theme and creating a three-part series of conferences around that theme. Through speakers and workshops, participants discussed the role of the church in this region, and the distinct religious ethos that presents unique challenges and opportunities, Kluth said.
“It’s a challenging event in which we not only listen to the history and what brought us to this place, but we also ask how do different churches in rural or suburban-urban settings, how do they share their communities of faith,” Kluth said. “It stretched us.”
The 2008 and 2009 conferences will both take place on campus. This year’s moved off campus due to the renovations to the University Center.
