Former labor secretary Robert Reich will address Pacific Lutheran University graduates and their families at Commencement on Sunday, May 27.
The university will award 525 undergraduate and 100 graduate degrees. The ceremony will be at 2:30 p.m. at the Tacoma Dome and culminates a weekend of activities designed to send students off toward “lives of purpose,” a key facet of PLU’s mission.
Reich is currently a professor of public policy at the University of California at Berkeley. He served in three national administrations, most recently under President Bill Clinton. An accomplished author and scholar, Reich spoke at PLU in May 2006 at the dedication of the Morken Center for Learning and Technology.
Student speakers at the ceremony include graduates Jennifer Henrichsen and Jessica Holden, who were both nominated to speak by faculty and staff members.
This year marks the second year that spring commencement will be held off campus at the Tacoma Dome. The 6,000-seat venue allows students to bring an unlimited number of friends and family to the ceremony; in the past, guests were limited because the event was held at PLU’s Olson Auditorium.
Tickets are not required for graduation, and PLU encourages friends and family of graduates to attend. Doors will open at 1 p.m. Immediately following the ceremony, a reception for graduates and guests will be held in the Tacoma Dome Exhibition Hall.
The Tacoma Dome is located at 2727 East D Street. The Tacoma Dome has 10 public parking lots, and there will be a $6 parking fee for the PLU Commencement ceremony.
Pacific Lutheran University offers more than 3,600 students a unique blend of academically rigorous liberal arts and professional programs that prepare them for a lifetime of success – both in their careers and in service to others.
