Graduates to speak on vocation, community
May 18, 2007

More than 600 undergraduate and graduate students will participate in spring commencement at the Tacoma Dome on Sunday, May 27 at 2:30 p.m.
The ceremony features a keynote address by former U.S. Secretary of Labor Robert Reich, as well as speeches by graduating seniors Jennifer Henrichsen and Jessica Holden.
Reich served in three national administrations, most recently under former President Bill Clinton. He is currently a professor of public policy at the University of California at Berkeley. An accomplished author and scholar, Reich spoke at PLU in May 2006 at the dedication of the Morken Center for Learning and Technology.
Student speakers were added to the spring ceremony last year, when it was moved off campus to the Tacoma Dome to accommodate a larger audience. Faculty and staff members nominated Henrichsen and Holden to speak.
“I’m very honored,” Henrichsen said of her nomination. “It’s exciting to have the chance to represent your fellow students.”
While at PLU, Henrichsen studied abroad in Geneva, Norway, Germany, Greece and England. She said her speech will focus on how her many study away experiences have shaped her sense of vocation.
Henrichsen will graduate with degrees in political science and communication. She recently learned she received a Fulbright grant to study the Press Emblem Campaign in Switzerland. The campaign seeks to create a new international convention that protects members of the media in conflict situations. Her award is contingent upon being accepted at a Swiss university, and at this point, she’s waiting to be accepted.
For her speech, Holden will address the connections between the PLU community and the world community, particularly how students have a responsibility follow their path and be good citizens of the world.
During her time on campus, Holden studied away in Norway and was active in the Wang Center for International Programs as a Sojourner Advocate and as the student coordinator for February’s “World Conversations: Voices from Around the Globe” event.
Additionally, Holden was one of 16 students who traveled to New Orleans during spring break 2006 to help clean up the devastation left in Hurricane Katrina’s wake. She will graduate with a degree in communication.
This year marks the second year that commencement has been held off campus at the Tacoma Dome. The larger venue allows students to bring an unlimited number of friends and family to the ceremony, and tickets are not required.
The doors open at the Tacoma Dome at 1 p.m. the day of commencement, and candidates must arrive by 1 p.m. The bookstore will have PLU gear available for purchase at the Tacoma Dome.
Parking at the Tacoma Dome is abundant, but does cost $6. There is free parking on nearby streets. For driving directions and information on Tacoma Dome policies, click here.
