Faculty, student excellence honored at Regents’ meeting
May 11, 2007
The Board of Regents held its annual spring meeting last week. Among other action, the board approved 13 faculty recipients of Regency Advancement Awards and endorsed the offering of a new master’s program in conflict analysis and collaborative problem solving.
The Regency Advancement Awards are meant to enhance opportunities for professional development and encourage faculty to pursue scholarship and creative projects. The annual awards are competitive, and faculty must submit detailed applications about their proposed project. Each faculty project can receive up to $4,000.
The faculty members who received the award for the following academic year are: James Albrecht, English; JP Avila, art; Rick Barot, English; Claudia Berguson, languages and literatures; Maria Chavez, political science; Mary Ellard-Ivey, biology; Amanda Feller, communication and theatre; Akiko Nosaka, anthropology; Donna Poppe, music; Daniel Renfrow, sociology; Allison Stinger, physical education; William Teska, biology; and Neal Yakelis, chemistry.
In addition, the administration was authorized to continue preparing for a major capital campaign with a preliminary goal of $150 million. The funds will be used for a variety of projects across campus, from endowment building to the renovation of Eastvold Hall and improved athletic facilities. There is no projected start date for the campaign at this time.
Other board action included the approval of the appointments of Steve Titus as vice president for development and university relations and Karl Stumo as vice president for admission and enrollment services. The appointment of the new dean of the School of Education, John Lee, was also ratified and his tenure was approved.
The board honored three retiring regents this year: Kathleen Jacobson, Katherine Johnson and Richard Omland. The board also nominated Roe Hatlan as at-large regent for the 2007-2009 term and Robert Gomulkiewicz, Roberta Goodnow, Michelle Long and Larry Neeb as at-large regents for the 2007-2010 term.
Additional board action:
