Postage rates increase, lock in rate with “forever stamp”
May 11, 2007
The cost of mailing a letter will increase on May 14 to 41 cents, but a new “forever stamp” will allow you to lock in the new rate.
The forever stamp can be used to mail one-ounce first-class letters anytime in the future, regardless of how rates rise. The stamp went on sale April 12.
Additionally, the postal service is changing its whole concept of pricing, said Larry Barnes, mail services supervisor. Currently, the cost to mail a package is determined solely by its weight, but the new pricing structure will take into account both the weight and shape of the package.
For example, a two-ounce letter-sized envelope will cost less than a large, flat envelope. This is because mailers can reduce postage by as much as 39 cents if the contents of the large envelope are folded and placed in the letter-sized envelope.
“When people put something in the mail slot, we want them to make sure they have the right postage on it,” Barnes said.
