Wind Ensemble to premiere new compositions
May 11, 2007
The University Wind Ensemble will perform the world premiere of two compositions at a concert on Tuesday, May 15 at 8 p.m. in Lagerquist Concert Hall.
The first piece is Song Mingzhu’s “Scenes of Sichuan Opera.” Mingzhu, a faculty member at the Sichuan Conservatory of Music in China, was one of four Chinese composers who participated in a concert exchange at PLU on April 26.
His composition fuses Western harmonies with traditional Chinese folk melodies and Chinese opera percussion instruments. While visiting PLU, Song worked with the ensemble musicians on the piece.
The other composition to be premiered is music professor Greg Youtz’ “The Wound Dresser.” Based on the Walt Whitman poem of the same title, the work also features the vocal talents of music professor James Brown.
“The Wind Ensemble is committed to championing new music, and no where is it more evident than at this concert,” said Ed Powell, the ensemble’s conductor.
The concert is open to the public. Tickets are $8 for general admission, $5 for senior citizens, $3 for alumni, and the concert is free for PLU students, faculty and staff.
