Scholar to decode “mute clamor” of Rome

April 27, 2007

Latin scholar Tyler Lansford will present an illustrated lecture on Friday, May 11 at 12:30 p.m. in Admin 101 about the Latin inscriptions found throughout Rome.

In exploring the many Latin inscriptions of Rome through slides, Lansford will help decode the story of this ancient city, which Lansford describes as the “mute clamor of an immemorial and seldom overheard conversation.”

No prior knowledge of Latin is needed to enjoy the slideshow and lecture – all inscriptions will be translated.

Lansford holds a doctorate in classics from the University of Washington and taught there for eight years before becoming a co-founder of the Seattle Language Academy, where he is the director of the Classics Program. He teaches, writes, lectures and travels extensively, and his book, “A Traveler’s Guide to the Latin Inscriptions of Rome,” is forthcoming from Johns Hopkins University Press.

Lansford’s lecture is sponsored by the Department of Languages and Literatures.
