PLU earns plaudits for recycling

April 27, 2007

PLU recently learned that it was selected for a 2007 Recycler of the Year award by the Washington State Recycling Association. It is the second time in three years that PLU has been chosen in its category, Institution of Higher Learning.

Barb McConathy, environmental services coordinator, and Dave Kohler, director of facilities, will attend the WSRA’s annual conference in Vancouver next month to accept the award in person.

PLU was chosen for the award on the strength of its comprehensive approach to recycling on campus. The nomination form particularly highlighted the “Can the Can” campaign held in October of last year that encouraged faculty and staff members to give up personal trash cans in favor of recycling as much as possible.

Since October, nearly half of all faculty and staff at PLU have elected to forgo regular trash service and instead made the commitment to take responsibility for their own garbage and recycling.

The campaign was initiated in part to help boost PLU’s recycling rate from around 65 percent to a goal of 80 percent over the next five years. The national recycling rate is 30 percent, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.
