The lighter side

The lighter side

Music professor Kathleen Farner delivered a masterful rendition of Mozart on the garden hose at the newly revived “Music You Hate to Love” concert on April 15. That’s right, she used a garden hose as a musical instrument.

The light-hearted concert was an annual tradition for 20 years, but hadn’t been presented at PLU in nearly 10 years. It returned this year with a full cast of new music faculty eager to join in the fun.

The concert displays the lesser-known talents of the music department faculty in a tone far less serious than the usual campus concert. It helps the campus community see the music department in a slightly different light and shows the fun side of classical music, said music professor Richard Farner.

In addition to entertaining the masses, the concert raises money for the Music Scholarship Fund.
This year’s performance featured Richard Nance and David Joyner performing German art songs with a “cowboy twist, ” while the piano faculty’s performance included two pianos and eight hands. Additionally, a group known collectively as “I Solisti di Spanaway” performed “P.D.Q. Bach,” an extended joke written by musical satirist Peter Schickele.
