Green building earns PLU more grant funds
April 13, 2007
When the Morken Center for Learning and Technology was granted gold-level certification under the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program in July, it also earned the university an additional $250,000 in grant money from the Kresge Foundation.
The foundation gave PLU $800,000 toward the construction of the Morken Center back in 2003. The funds came from Kresge’s Capital Challenge Grant program; as an additional incentive, Kresge offers a “green bonus grant” for projects that receive LEED certification. The bonus ranges from $150,000 to $250,000 based on the level of certification the building receives.
PLU received the full $250,000 because the Morken Center was rated “gold”– one of the highest certification levels available.
According to Teri Moore, development director of major gifts for corporations and foundations, Kresge grants are prestigious and highly competitive, as the foundation only funds one of every five proposals they receive. Since 1966, PLU has received six Kresge Foundation grants for various projects.
The Kresge Foundation launched a Green Building Initiative in 2003 to increase awareness of sustainable or green building practices among nonprofits and encourage the organizations to build green. The initiative offers educational resources and special grants to help during the planning phases.
The initiative also includes the LEED bonus grant program. According to the foundation’s Web site, it has committed a total of $7.2 million to 42 nonprofit organizations in the form of capital challenge grants eligible for the bonus.
