PLU student life staff share knowledge
April 13, 2007
A small contingent of staff members from Student Involvement and Leadership and Residential Life attended and presented at the national joint meeting of the two most prominent student affairs professional organizations.
More than 9,000 professionals gathered at the 2007 joint meeting of the Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education and College Student Educators International held in Orlando, Fla., at the beginning of this month. The meeting happens every 10 years, and this year’s theme was “Our Power and Responsibility to Shape Education.”
The meeting is a collection of presentations, special events and keynote speeches. This year’s meeting started off with an address by former Vice President Al Gore. While more than 1,800 programs from around the nation submitted presentation proposals, only 568 were selected. Three of those selected were submitted by PLU.
SIL director Eva Johnson and SIL associate director Rick Eastman gave a presentation titled, “The Power of Pause and Ponder: Sustainable Pedagogy for New and Mid-Level Professionals.”
Johnson and Eastman discussed the lack of appropriate methods to determine the success of student programs designed by new and mid-level student affairs professionals. The two focused on practical strategies to assess programs and looked at the future of sustainable pedagogy for professionals.
Also at the joint meeting, SIL assistant director Allison Stephens and Residential Life associate director Jeffrey Krengel presented “Connecting Learning Across Contexts: Integrating Learning Reconsidered and Your Academic Learning Objectives.”
Stephens and Olsen Krengel discussed the university’s current strategies and future plans to integrate student affairs into the broader campus curriculum, and they talked about ways student affairs affects student outcomes.
Finally, Susan Mann, director of study away, and Laura Majovski, vice president for admission and student life, gave a presentation titled “The Global Reach of Student Life: Strategies for Leading Campus Internationalization.”
Mann and Majovski discussed the definition of a global education and the ways student affairs can contribute to it. Their interactive session used PLU’s global education program as an example of how student affairs can partner proactively with academic departments in the learning enterprise.
Also attending the meeting from PLU were Joelle Pretty, director of transfer admission, Andrea Shea, SIL’s graduate intern, and resident directors Shelley Griffith, Josh Alexander and Lace Smith, who is also SIL’s program coordinator.
