President Anderson attends higher education summit
April 05, 2007
President Loren Anderson was one of 12 university presidents selected to represent independent colleges and universities at the U.S. Department of Education’s “Summit on the Future of American Higher Education” in March.
Convened by education secretary Margaret Spellings, only 275 people attended the summit in Washington, D.C. The event focused on the federal government’s priorities for higher education, including cost controls and student learning outcomes.
According to Anderson, if the department’s plans are left unchecked, it could signify unprecedented intrusion by the federal government into the academic affairs of colleges and universities. While it’s appropriate for colleges and universities to be held accountable, particularly for the financial aid dollars students bring to the institutions, it’s equally important independent colleges retain their autonomy.
