Math prof and two alums publish research paper

Associate Professor of Mathematics Dane Wu and two PLU alumni recently published a joint paper in the Journal of Mathematical Sociology.
Wu worked with recent graduates Kerry Fletcher and Lindsay Olson as part of a summer student-faculty research project while the two were students at PLU. The paper, titled “A Study of College Student Attrition via Probabilistic Approach,” appeared in the journal’s January-March issue.
The paper proposes a probabilistic approach to identify key factors that cause college students to drop out, including attributable and confounding risk factors. The researchers illustrated their technique through data collected over eight years at PLU, and argue other institutional researchers can use the technique to test their own data.
