Dance 2007 showcases original choreography

A vibrant and diverse series of performances will mark Dance 2007 on April 13 and 14 at 8 p.m. in Eastvold Auditorium.

The night’s program will feature a collection of dance numbers, ranging in style from jazz and tap to modern and lyrical. The performance even includes a ballet piece done en pointe.

PLU alumna and dance team director Tara Holliday will make her directing debut, as she fills in for Maureen McGill, associate professor of dance and theater. McGill is currently on sabbatical.

Holliday will present a lyrical piece that incorporates three panels of 75-foot long satin fabric rigged 20-feet off the floor. Attached to a small group of dancers, the fabric will span the entire width of the stage and flow behind the dancers as they perform to music by Sarah Brightman and Andrea Bocelli.

In all, the performance will feature 14 choreographers and more than 60 dancers. Guest choreographer, Lynn Wilmot-Stenehjem, dance director at the Morgan Family YMCA in Tacoma, will present an expressive piece that doesn’t include music. Instead, the performance is set to a recording of Maya Angelou as she reads three of her poems, “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me,” “Women Work” and “Human Family.”

Wilmot-Stenehjem trained at the London College of Dance, and she has taught and danced professionally in Europe and Canada. She has performed and toured with a number of local dance companies, most recently as a member of the Tacoma Dance Collective performance group.

The additional pieces featured in Dance 2007 were arranged by student artists and include:
  • PLU dance team captain Liz Erie, who choreographed an upbeat and energetic dance set to music from the 2006 movie “Step Up”
  • Senior Kara Powell, whose piece uses music by Outkast and was inspired by her study abroad experience in London
  • Lisa Rogers, whose Broadway tap number is loosely based on Monty Python’s hit musical, “Spamalot”
  • Senior Megan Henderson, who designed a dark, intense, dream-like sequence set to techno music
  • Senior Catherine Engstrom, who choreographed a work illustrating the fun of dancing
  • Mollie Marine, who used Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song” as the backdrop for her high energy number
  • Senior Laura Boye, whose dance represents the myriad of emotions behind missing someone you love that is set to music by Imogen Heap
  • Dmitry Mikheyev, who illustrates the dangers of preconceived notions through an interpretive dance starring jungle creatures
  • Senior Emily Berentson, whose dance illustrates the ups and downs of falling in love
  • Kristina Huehl, who choreographed a number that marries modern dance and ballet pointe work set to music by Switchfoot
  • Senior Kristin Burch, whose jazzy number is set to the stylized music of Vancouver vocalist Michael Buble
  • Senior Anna Hagen, whose upbeat, fast-paced dance, set to various songs by the Black Eyed Peas and Fergie, will close out the show

Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students, senior citizens, children under 12 and the PLU community. Tickets are available in advance through the Campus Concierge at 253-535-7411 or at the door the night of the event.
