Deputies on campus to improve safety
March 22, 2007
Pierce County Sheriff’s Department deputies will be on campus during the next few weeks to better familiarize themselves with campus buildings and the campus community.
PLU regularly employs approximately 25 deputies to patrol the area surrounding campus, and occasionally, it’s necessary for the deputies to respond to issues on campus, said Tom Huelsbeck, assistant dean of campus life and director of residential operations.
By touring campus in the company of Campus Safety operations supervisors, the deputies will be better equipped to respond to on-campus situations. Additionally, it will strengthen the connection between the sheriff’s department and the university, Huelsbeck said.
PLU and the sheriff’s department have a unique partnership that includes contracting deputies to patrol the perimeter of campus. Additionally, the director of Campus Safety, Jesus Villahermosa, is sergeant with the department who signed a contract with PLU to serve as the director.
