Political arts group presentation will dissect world issues

March 16, 2007

A political arts organization, The Beehive Design Collective, will give a visual presentation titled “Plan Colombia” on Tuesday, March 20 at 7:30 p.m. in Xavier 201.

The non-profit, volunteer driven group of artists is based in eastern Maine and dedicated to “cross-pollinate the grassroots” through the creation of illustrations. The group travels around Latin America, talking to community members about the effects of globalization on their situation.

The artists then hand illustrate those stories through visual metaphors featuring characters from the plant and animal world on massive tapestries. Once complete, the group tours the country, presenting their tapestry to educate the public about complex geopolitical issues.

Their presentation at PLU will feature a 16-foot tapestry and a six-foot tall fabric storybook that has forty enlargements of scenes from the larger illustration. The artists will narrate through the mural’s details and facts, breaking down complex issues and explaining how they are connected to the “bigger picture.”
