Banquet honors inspirational women, focuses on peace
March 16, 2007
The 11th annual Inspirational Women’s Banquet features food, music and fashion on the theme, “Women and Peace,” on Thursday, March 22 at 5 p.m. in Chris Knutzen Hall.
This year’s banquet features a fashion show that explores how fashion reflects the broader culture, said Bobbi Hughes, director of the Women’s Center. With clothing designed and modeled by PLU students, the show includes three themed runways: Camo Nation, Modeling War and Visions for Peace.
“The point is to raise awareness and explore women’s role in peace and war through the fashion show,” Hughes said. “It’s a fashion show with a cause.”
The banquet, held in recognition of Women’s History Month, celebrates women from the PLU community and honors their accomplishments. Throughout the month, the campus community has submitted nominations of female faculty, staff, alumni and students who have been an inspiration to others and worked towards community, justice and equity.
Three nominees are recognized at the banquet by receiving a certificate and recognition for their accomplishments. The names of all the women nominated are compiled into a program that includes the reasons for their nomination. Past nominees have ranged from prominent professors to friendly coffee shop workers.
The banquet also includes an address by Linda Frank from the South Sound Women in Black organization. She will speak about the organization’s role in promoting peacekeeping efforts.
Reservations and tickets are required to attend the banquet. Tickets are available at the Women’s Center or at the door on March 22. Tickets cost $5 for faculty and staff, and $2 or a meal swipe for students. The money will be donated to support local peace efforts.
