Students elected junior Carl Pierce to be their student-government president and junior Tamara Power-Drutis to the position of ASPLU vice president during the general election last Monday and Tuesday.

A total of 615 votes were cast. Pierce and Power-Drutis will officially take office on April 1, at which time they will begin to hire members of their executive committee.

Pierce and Power-Drutis plan to increase ASPLU’s visibility on campus by collaborating with organizations across campus, and to better inform students about ways they can get involved. Students want to do great things, but many don’t know they can do those things on campus, Power-Drutis said.

The president- and vice president-elect are especially excited about the renovation of the University Center. The new layout of the building places the student organizations and ASPLU in one area, which will increase cooperation among the groups, Pierce explained. The renovation also gives ASPLU a fresh start and an opportunity to build on the traditions already in place.

Since they were freshmen, both Pierce and Power-Drutis have been involved in student clubs and organizations, served as resident assistants and as resident assistants with additional duties. Their involvement has allowed them to connect with their peers and develop leadership skills.

“My experiences generated a vision for PLU that grew,” Pierce said.

Both value the sense of community found in the residence halls and hope to bring that same “family feeling” to ASPLU, Power-Drutis said.

“I really value that community sense,” Power-Drutis said. “We want to continue that family sense in this new challenge.”
