Film series examines issues of sexism, violence

February 16, 2007

The Men Against Violence film series returns this spring with five films on the docket.

The series kicks off on Tuesday, Feb. 20 with the showing of “Beyond Beats and Rhymes: A Hip-Hop Head Weighs in on Manhood in Hip-Hop Culture” at 7 p.m. in Ingram 100.

The film combines video clips with interviews of well-known and aspiring rappers, intellectuals and people on the street to examine issues of sexism, racism, homophobia and violence.

Byron Hurt directs the film. He describes himself as a lifelong fan of hip-hop music, but he doesn’t approve of the direction the genre is taking. His film focuses on how the genre’s portrayal of masculinity often mimics homophobic or sexist posturing. To learn more about the film, visit www.genderyouth.org/hip-hop.

The film showing is open to the Pierce County community. Jonathan Grove, the Men Against Violence program coordinator, said he expects to fill the room with 100 PLU students and groups from local schools, the YWCA and other local men’s groups.

The series will continue with a film showing every Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Women’s Center Lounge through March 20. The schedule includes “Fight Club” on Feb. 27, “North Country” on March 6, “The 40-year-old Virgin” on March 13 and “Monster” on March 20.

The Men Against Violence student group holds meetings every Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in the Women’s Center living room. The first meeting was held last week.
