The University Wind Ensemble’s Homecoming Concert last Friday concluded the group’s nine-day performance tour to churches and high schools in northern Washington state and British Columbia.
The ensemble performed in Vancouver, B.C., Bellingham and Mount Vernon, while also participating in educational exchanges at high schools in Bainbridge Island, Bothell and Mercer Island. During the exchanges, the high school students were able to ask the PLU musicians questions and learn about PLU’s music program and general information about the university.
The ensemble’s performances featured trumpet solos by Zachary Lyman, assistant professor of trumpet and music theory. Lyman joined the PLU music faculty this year, and he teaches classroom music, directs the trumpet ensemble and performs in the Lyric Brass Quintet.
During the tour, the students also attended the Vancouver Opera’s performance of the “Magic Flute” and world-renowned violinist Itzhak Perlman’s performance at Benaroya Hall in Seattle.
The ensemble is conducted by Ed Powell, assistant professor of music and director of bands. Powell also conducts the concert band and teaches courses in conducting and music education.
The ensemble will perform next at the National Association for Music Education’s Northwest Conference on Feb. 16 in Portland.
