Regents discuss tuition, capital campaign

The Board of Regents held its annual winter meeting last week, and among other action, established a 7.2 percent increase to tuition and fees for full-time undergraduate students for the 2007-08 academic year.

Full-time tuition was set at $25,088 and room and meals at $7,712, for a comprehensive total of $32,800. Part-time and graduate tuition was set at $784 a credit hour.

More than 90 percent of PLU students receive some kind of financial aid. On average, when scholarships, grants and other assistance are factored in, the average student's yearly total is closer to $11,000.

In addition, the administration was authorized to continue planning for a major capital campaign. The next steps include working on the philanthropic market study the university commissioned late last year and refining campaign components and goals. The progress in these areas will be presented to the board in May, with a final recommendation expect in October 2007.

The study was performed to identify opportunities within PLU's existing donor pool and to help the university properly align its staffing to best reach donors who may contribute to a large-scale capital campaign. The campaign is aimed at raising roughly $150 million to fund a variety of projects across campus, from the expansion and renovation of Eastvold Hall to improved athletic facilities.

There is no projected start date for the campaign at this time.

In other board action:

  • PLU presented the results of the Student Satisfaction Inventory, a national survey that measures student satisfaction. The survey was taken by 1,000 students last fall. Students rated 10 out of 12 scales above the national average, one at the national average and one below.

The survey has been given seven times in the last 10 years, and each year, PLU students have given the university higher marks. According to the report, the university's consistent improvement is credited to successful programming.

Laura Majovski, vice president for student life and admission, will present the survey results to students at the ASPLU meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 6 at 6 p.m. in the Lute Lounge.
  • The board received an update on the bond financing it authorized the administration to secure to fund campus facilities projects last fall.
  • The board was treated to an evening banquet on Friday that featured presentations on the globalization of the university, including study away programs and information on the Wang Center's upcoming “World Conversations: Voices from Around the Globe” event slated for Feb. 22 and 23.
  • Other committee activity included a review of the enrollment trends and retention statistics for J-Term and spring 2007, as well as information for fall 2007, and presentations by Academic Affairs, Budget and Finance, Development, and Student Life.

It has been two years since the conclusion of the university's last major fundraising campaign. “The Next Bold Step: The Campaign for Pacific Lutheran University” raised $128 million over six years, and in part funded the construction of the new Morken Center for Learning and Technology, among many other projects.

The next Board of Regents meeting will be held May 4 and 5.
