UC renovation forces major (temporary) changes

After spring break, the doors to the University Center will close so a major renovation can begin.

All UC offices should be relocated by March 24. Construction will take place throughout the summer, with the new and improved building open in time for the fall 2007 semester.

Over the next two months, all the clubs, organizations and offices currently housed in the UC will be moving to temporary locations across campus – from Harstad and Tinglestad halls to Lee House, East Campus and the Hauge Administration Building.

“People are in good spirits,” said Mark Mulder, director of auxiliary services. “Our eyes are all on the end product and completely focused on what will be a fantastic University Center when the doors open.”

The reshuffling began last week, with Campus Ministry, the Diversity Center, campus clubs and organizations, Student Involvement and Leadership and Saxifrage moving into new digs. Following is a list of the new locations:
  • Campus Ministry is in rooms 109 and 134 of Harstad.
  • Campus clubs and organizations, Student Involvement and Leadership and the Diversity Center are located in Lee House.
  • Saxifrage is in room 102 of Tingelstad.

The moving schedule for the rest of the UC offices follows:
  • ASPLU Offices and Outdoor Recreation staff will move to Lee House on March 2.
  • IMPACT will move to rooms 103 and 104 in Tingelstad on Feb. 15 and 16.
  • KCCR and KCNS will move to room 201 in Hauge Administration Building by March 24.
  • The Mast and the Matrix will likely move to the East Campus computer lab between March 26 and 30.
  • Auxiliary Services will move to the ground floor of Harstad (the kitchen, G11 and G12) before March 24.
  • Lute Card services will move to room 126 in the Library.
  • Dining Services, including the staff offices and catering offices, will move to the Columbia Center.

After spring break, all campus maps will include an insert detailing the new locations of former UC offices.

Students who depend on the UC Commons for meals will be relieved to know Dining Services will be offering multiple dining options. The Commons will remain open through March 23.

After that, the main cafeteria will move to the upstairs of the Columbia Center on lower campus. Many of the same meals will be served, and students will continue to pay with their meal card for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The Columbia Center will be open seven days a week, from 7 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.

The room in the Columbia Center is considerably smaller than the Commons, so other locations will be made available:
  • The Bistro, located in the Columbia Center, will be open seven days a week from 10:15 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 to 10 p.m.
  • Old Main Grill, located at 417 Garfield Street, will be open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • “Monday Night on Garfield” will give students the chance to enjoy dinner at a host restaurant on Garfield Street, like Northern Pacific Coffee Company, by using a meal card swipe at the Concierge Desk to receive a voucher for a participating restaurant. A complete list of restaurants is still being determined. Times vary from 4:30 to 10 p.m.
  • Picnics will be hosted for Saturday lunch and dinner in April and May, weather permitting. They will be tied to campus events when possible, for example, an all-campus luau in coordination with the Hawaii Club. Times and locations vary.
  • “Dine-ins” will be hosted every Sunday night in a group of residence halls in April and May. The dinner meal will be catered and requires no meal plan. By the end of the semester, all residence halls will have hosted a meal.
  • “Finals Week Treats” will kick off finals week May 21 through May 26 with a breakfast buffet on Sunday. The week will continue with a nacho bar, sundaes, cookies and cocoa.
