American philosopher to speak about global citizenship

February 09, 2007

American philosopher Martha Nussbaum will give a speech titled “Liberal Education and Global Citizenship” on Thursday, Feb. 15 at 7:30 p.m. in Lagerquist Concert Hall.

Nussbaum is currently the Ernst Freund Distinguished Professor of Law and Ethics at the University of Chicago Law School. She previously taught at Harvard, Brown and Oxford universities.

“She’s one of the true giants in multidisciplinary and international studies scholarship,” said Paul Menzel, PLU professor of philosophy.

Nussbaum founded and coordinates the Center for Comparative Constitutionalism at the University of Chicago. Established in 2002, the center focuses on the relationship between constitutional law and the concerns of marginalized or subordinated people and groups.

Nussbaum’s interest in ancient philosophy, political philosophy and ethics is reflected in her numerous publications. These include “The Fragility of Goodness: Luck and Ethics in Greek Tragedy and Philosophy,” “Cultivating Humanity: A Classical Defense of Reform in Liberal Education” and “Democracy in the Balance: Violence, Hope and India’s Future.” For more information about Nussbaum, visit www.law.uchicago.edu/faculty/nussbaum.
