Storm named top educator by state association

January 12, 2007

The Washington Association for Marriage and Family Therapy named Cheryl Storm, professor of marriage and family therapy, the 2006 Educator of the Year.

The award honors Storm’s excellence in teaching and outstanding commitment to her students. Storm said she was especially pleased to receive the award because a former student nominated her.

“This is a very meaningful and momentous occasion for me, as this honor signifies what my professional career has been about: education. My passion as a family therapist has only been exceeded by my passion as an educator,” Storm said in an acceptance statement she prepared for the banquet.

Storm has been at PLU for more than 20 years, and she joined with her colleague Charlie York to initiate and attain accreditation for the university’s marriage and family therapy department. She is respected nationally for her teaching abilities and clinical knowledge.

Storm served on the Washington State Department of Health Advisory Committee. She is the editor of the Journal of Systemic Therapies, a regular presenter at national conferences and was the president of the association in 1990. She earned her doctorate from Purdue University.
