High school honor bands will perform two concerts
January 05, 2007
The Northwest High School Honor Band will hold two performances on Jan. 13 in Lagerquist Concert Hall at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. under the direction of Ed Powell, professor of music.
High school students from around the Northwest are nominated by their band directors to participate in the two-day intensive clinic that begins on Jan. 12. Nationally known conductors Jack Stamp and Ryan Nelson will lead the clinics.
Stamp is professor of music and the conductor of bands at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He is active as a guest conductor, clinician and composer throughout North America and Great Britain, and his compositions have been commissioned and performed by leading military and university bands across the United States.
Nelson is the associate director of bands at Northwestern University. He coordinates the undergraduate conducting curriculum, teaches courses in music education and wind literature, and serves as a guest conductor, clinician, and arranger.
At the clinic, Stamp will work with the symphonic band while Nelson works with the concert band. PLU faculty will also hold master class sessions with the high school students.
The concert band will perform at 5 p.m., followed by the symphonic band at 7 p.m. The concerts are free and open to the public with seating on a first come, first served basis.
